Summary
- This project aimed to investigate ancient pastoralism in Classical and Hellenistic periods in the territory of Montescaglioso (MT). Through a systematic, intensive and full-coverage survey, 55 sq km of the research area have been covered during the autumn seasons of the years 2007-2010 (28 weeks of fieldwork in total). The research strategy adopted is based on the integrated use of a wide range of information sources, as well as a variety of non-destructive technologies and field techniques.

- The survey team consisted of a minimum of five to a maximum of ten field walkers spaced ten meters apart, which were reduced to five meters when artifact concentrations were encountered. Grids of 5x5 meters were employed to survey the artifact concentrations (i.e. “Unità Topografiche – UT”), record the position of the artifacts, quantify the density per sq m of artifact classes and collect only the diagnostic material from the grid quadrats. For several UTs a grid system of 1x1m was used to evaluate the stratigraphy and to collect palynological and geochemical samples. The visibility factor possibly affecting the results was also noticed and registered.

- This project sheds light on pastoralist activities carried out in the Montescaglioso territory during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Understanding is gained on land use strategies and settlement patters, and on how geomorphological conditions influenced them.
