Summary
- The surface survey of hitherto virtually unknown Medieval castle sites was undertaken to build up a corpus of medieval building types and plans that can be used as comparative material elsewhere, and most importantly to transform our understanding of Turkey in the middle ages.

- What was the degree of cultural continuity between the Byzantine and Turkish periods in the region? Were the populations moved to these sites by the Byzantine authorities? Did the authorities or the communities build the walls of these fortified castle sites? Why were these sites in particular fortified by the Byzantine state? What sort of purpose did they have in mind?
