Summary
- This survey began in response to the construction of the Ataturk dam, which was going to flood the survey area. Additionally, the area had only been been surveyed extensively during summer months when there was a great deal of vegetation covering the ground, so an intensive survey during cooler months produced a large body of new data.

- To enlarge and fill out the knowledge of the area learned through a previous survey before much of the land was submerged by the creation of a nearby dam. To attempt to establish the nature and distribution of sites outside of the valleys (that were soon to be submerged).
