Chronology

  • 199 BC - 399 AD

Season

    • Excavations carried out between 2017 and 2018 for the re-laying of the Rubbiano-Como gas pipeline took place within the territory of several municipalities in Milan’s eastern hinterland. The watching-brief undertaken by archaeologists led to the identification of three sites (Cassina de’ Pecchi, Cascina Pirotta; Bussero, Cascina Gogna; Melzo, Cascina Mascheroni) with traces of occupation and settlement remains principally datable to between the late Iron Age and the Roman imperial period. A probable midden containing pottery and brick/tile fragments of Roman date was found on the site of Cassina de’ Pecchi. At Bussero, the investigations identified traces of late Iron Age occupation (remains of several ‘a pozzetto’ burials together with several pits and probable post-holes) and the first centuries of the imperial period (a channel and road). At Melzo, the remains of a Roman rural settlement were uncovered (a small building and numerous middens and post-holes belonging to functional and service structures original built in perishable materials), probably part of a larger single complex (perhaps an urban-rural villa datable to the imperial period), not however identified by the excavations.
