EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KAMENOVO (Yavor Boyadziev – yavordb@abv.bg, Dimitar Chernakov) Graves from a Chalcolithic cemetery had been discovered during building works near the settlement mound. A stratum of the Chalcolithic period, 0.35 – 1.10 m thick, was documented at 90 m to the northeast of the settlement mound, containing sherds, flint artifacts, an anthropomorphic and a zoomorphic terracotta figurine, a terracotta loom weight, a bone awl. Three pits were discovered, containing fragmentary wattle-and-daub, flint splinters, sherds and animal bones. A stratum, 10 – 15 cm thick, was documented at 150 – 180 m to the north – northeast of the settlement mound, containing pieces of charcoal, Late Chalcolithic sherds and flint artifacts. Another stratum of the end of the Chalcolithic period was also discovered, containing flint artifacts and sherds and partly covering several burials. The dead in Graves 3A and 4 were children and the dead in the rest of the graves were women. Grave 1. Hocker laid on her back to the left. Oriented to the East – Northeast. Age: 20 – 40 years. Grave goods: two flint flakes. Grave 2. Hocker laid on her back to the right. Oriented to the Northeast. Age: 20 – 25 years. Grave goods: four beads from Spondylus and five beads from green mineral. Grave 3. Hocker laid to the left. Oriented to the East – Northeast. Age: 50 – 60 years. Grave goods: two fragmentary ceramic vessels and two flint artifacts. Grave 3A. The bones were disturbed. Grave 4. Hocker laid on its back to the left. Oriented to the East – Northeast. Age: 6 – 7 years. Grave 5. Hocker laid on her back to the left. Oriented to the East. Age: 30 – 40 years. Grave goods: a dish, two beads from Spondylus, four flint artifacts. Grave 6. Hocker laid to the left. Oriented to the East – Northeast. Age: 30 – 40 years. Grave goods: three beads from green mineral and carbonized grain. Grave 7. Hocker laid to the left. Oriented to the East. Age: 30 – 40 years. Grave goods: two beads from green mineral and a flint flake. Grave 8 was unexplored. The Chalcolithic settlement was a production center for flint artifacts.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KAMENOVO (Yavor Boyadziev – yavordb@abv.bg, Dimitar Chernakov) A layer with flint artifacts was discovered in Sondages 10, 11 and 12. The layer in Sondages 11 and 12 was c. 50 cm thick, containing several dozens of thousands flint artifacts: large splinters from the surface of the nuclei, fragments from plates, plates, nuclei. A workshop for initial production of flint artifacts existed on the site and there was a narrow specialization of the production process. Single Late Chalcolithic sherds and a fragment from terracotta anthropomorphic figurine were discovered in the layer with flint artifacts. Grave 8 was explored in Sondage 8. The dead was a man, 30 – 40 year old, laid in a Hocker position on his left side with head to the east. A stone battle axe was found close to his left shoulder and a bead from Spondylus over his right arm. The grave was dug out into an earlier pit, containing sherds and flint artifacts. Two burials of children (Inf. I) were explored in Sondage 11. They were dug into an earlier pit of the Early Chalcolithic period. The body in Grave 9 was laid in a Hocker position on its left side with head to the east – southeast. The body in Grave 10 was laid in a Hocker position on its back with head to the east. Grave 11 was explored in Sondage 12, belonging to a child, 2 – 3 years old, laid in a Hocker position on its left side. The burials dated to the first half of the Late Chalcolithic period, while the flint workshop dated to the last phase of the Late Chalcolithic period.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KAMENOVO (Yavor Boyadziev – yavordb@abv.bg, Dimitar Chernakov) Graves Nos. 12, 13 and 14, registered in 2016, were explored. Grave No. 15 was also discovered. All the graves were situated close to each other. Grave No. 12 belonged to a child laid in a Hocker position on its right side, with head to the southwest. A flint artifact was the single grave good. Grave No. 13 belonged to an adult laid in a Hocker position on his left side, with head to the northeast. The burial pit contained occasional finds from the surrounding stratum: 17 flint flakes and 14 flint artifacts. Grave No. 14 belonged to an adult laid in a Hocker position on his left side, with head to the southeast. The grave goods included a flint artifact, a flint plate, fragmentary ceramic vessels and sherds. Grave No. 15 belonged to an adult laid in a Hocker position on his left side, with head to the northeast. The grave goods included a stone battle axe, a flint plate and a flint artifact. The burials dated to the first half of the Late Chalcolithic period.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KAMENOVO (Yavor Boyadziev – yavordb@abv.bg, Dimitar Chernakov) In Sondages 10 and 13, the explorations of the layer abundant with flint artifacts continued. The artifacts included mostly fragments from the flint production, but also adzes, scrapers, plates and an awl. The burials of the first half of the Late Chalcolithic period were dug into that layer. A man laid in a Hocker position on his left side was buried in Grave No. 16. A ceramic dish was placed over him and two more dishes were placed each above other over the first one. A man laid in a Hocker position on his back was buried in Grave No. 17. A man laid in a Hocker position on his left side was buried in Grave No. 18. The grave goods included a stone battle axe and a stone adze. The bodies in all the burials were oriented to the east. A contemporary pit was documented that had destroyed at least one more burial: fragments from the skull of a man and a copper battle axe were found there. A flint workshop and necropolis existed on the site during the Chalcolithic period.
