ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KALITINOVO (Petar Kalchev – kalchevp@abv.bg) The settlement mound covered an area of 1.5 ha and was occupied during the Neolithic Period and the Early Bronze Age. Four sondages were carried out in its western part. An Early Neolithic stratum, 1.20 m thick, was documented in Sondage I. A partly preserved floor of a house, consisting of trampled clay 5 cm thick, was explored. Fragmentary wattle-and-daub from collapsed walls, 15 – 20 cm wide, was discovered over the floor. A bottom of an oven or a hearth was documented and a quern was discovered. The finds from the house comprised a whetstone and fragmentary ceramic vessels. A dug-out structure, 4.50 m by 7 – 10 m in size, cut the Early Neolithic stratum containing debris from the house. The structure contained fragmentary wattle-and-daub, ash, charcoal, Early Neolithic sherds and animal bones, and had at least six stages of filing. An Early Neolithic stratum, 90 cm thick, was explored in Sondage II, containing sherds and fragmentary wattle-and-daub. Two pits were discovered, containing fragmentary wattle-and-daub, animal bones, ash, charcoal and Early Neolithic sherds (Karanovo I Culture). Strata from the Early Bronze Age III (Sveti Kirilovo Culture) and the Middle Neolithic period (Proto-Karanovo III Culture) were documented in Sondages III and IV, 50/90 cm and 1/1.20 m thick. A Late Neolithic pit was explored in Sondage IV. It cut a Middle Neolithic stratum containing charcoal, animal bones and sherds.
