This archaeological area has been known since the mid 20th century and occasional investigations have taken place there leading to the identification of a villa rustica in use from the mid Republican period until the 4th century A.D.
Later, a farmhouse of medieval/Renaissance date was built incorporating some standing opus reticulatum structures from the ancient complex, still partially visible in the cellar. The 2011 campaign revealed the presence of opus reticulatum walls across almost the entire natural terrace in front of the farmhouse, confirming what was evident on the surface, that is the presence of an open area, probably with a garden, around which a number of rooms were arranged.
Up against the south-eastern side of the farmhouse were the remains of dry-stone foundations, razed in a period preceding the creation of a track/small road. The latter served the farmhouse and perhaps the bath building of imperial date found in the immediate vicinity.
These foundations were built in peperino blocks, almost certainly in different periods judging from the construction techniques and the stratigraphic relationships. Abutting the outermost, there were traces of a beaten sand surface, which seemed to represent the related occupation level.
The road, recognisable in section at 0.70 m below the present ground level and at 1.08 m above the foundations, was on a north-west/south-east alignment. It was 1.84 m wide and the surface, within which there were fragments of coarse ware pottery and brick/tile fragments, showed two ruts left by cart wheels with an axle about 0.80 cm wide.
The identified structures seem to date to the settlement’s late Republican phase. An imposing bath complex was later built close by. Close to the property’s north-western perimeter the remains of cement foundation on a south-west/north-east alignment and another one at a right-angle to it were identified. They appeared to be on the same alignment as the terrace wall found in the past along the present road front.
These remains were probably the perimeter structures of the ancient complex where it met the ancient road, which at this point is followed by the modern road.
