The Republican sanctuary of Trebula Mutuesca stands in the southern part of a small valley (località Pantano), an area where most of the monumental evidence of this ancient site is situated. The sanctuary comprises a rectangular construction built on two terraces. The lower terrace is characterized by the presence of an open space surrounded by a portico, whilst the upper terrace (where excavations have only just begun) is probably the site of the sacellum. The complex was founded in the period between 265 and 240 B.C. Restoration work and the partial re-building of the portico structures took place in the second half of the 2nd century B.C. a period when the cult of the goddess Feronia is certainly attested, towards the end of the 1st century B.C. and again in the mid 2nd century A.D. The structure was abandoned during the 5th century A.D. after being widely robbed of its building materials. During the course of the medieval and Renaissance periods the area occupied by the upper terrace was used for agricultural purposes. (Giovanna Alvino-Giulio Vallarino)
