Season

    • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF MOSHTANETS (Krum Bacvarov – krum.bacvarov@googlemail.com, Georgi Katsarov) The site was situated on a hill. Thirty-eight sondages were carried out. Three ritual pits of the 2nd – 1st centuries BC were explored, containing burned fragmentary wattle-and-daub, Thracian sherds, including from pottery of the Tsepina Group, fragments from a clay eschara, terracotta loom weights, animal bones. Single sherds of the Early Chalcolithic period and the Late Iron Age were discovered along the slopes of the hill. A stratum was documented on its flat top. A corner of a burned building, probably constructed of timber plastered with clay, dated to the Early Chalcolithic period (beginning of the 5th millennium BC), was explored in Sondage BH9. A structure of roughly-cut stones and sherds of the Early Chalcolithic period was documented in Sondage BE9.
    • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF MOSHTANETS (Tanya Hristova, Martin Hristov – martohristov@yahoo.com) The site was situated on the upper parts of a coulee and the lower slopes of a hill. Sondages were carried out and the coulee of an old river was documented. Fragmentary building ceramics and sherds were found. In Sondages 1 and 2 located outside the coulee, two strata were documented, containing Late Antique and Late Hellenistic sherds, respectively. Part of a ramshackle building was explored and patches of charcoal, animal bones and Late Hellenistic sherds were discovered. A Late Antique site was documented at c. 30 m from Sondages 1 and 2 and three bronze coins were found there: one of Julian the Apostate and two of the Constantine Dynasty.
