Season

    • In 2008 the area under investigation covered over 3500 sq.m. The main features date to the VI-V century BC. and the I-IV century AD. Before the construction in the I-IV century this area was leveled and part of the previous building remains was disassembled. The only layers that preserved were the earliest ones, dated back to the VI-V century BC. In 2007-2008 excavation was conducted on the area of more than 700 sq.m. The excavation area was extended near the south-eastern frontier of the excavation site, to the east from previously uncovered southern part of the defensive wall of the II-III century (the area of around 90 sq.m.). Another subject of investigating - the main street of Olbia, was located to the west of the main site. As a result, much construction material was found. They relate to the three cultural-historical phases: Pre-Getae (i.e. the second quarter of the VI – mid. I century BC.); Post-Getae Age (end of the I century BC. - third quarter of the III century AD.); Late-Classical Age (late III-IV century). Part of the pavement in the main street and, possibly, the area of watercourses in south-western part of the site are attributed to the Late-Classical stage. All the above was constructed on the area where there had been the remains of buildings and pits, mostly functional , which date to the late III-IV century. Judging by the amphorae found inside the pits, they relate to the Late-Classical Age. The PostAfter-Getae period (I-III century). is represented by constructions There are few complexes dated to the I - first half of the II century in Olbia, including two buildings and a the yard near the house. The rooms were below ground and were used for functional purposes; the walls were partially disassembled afterwards. The foundations were placed upon the household pit dated to the first half of the I century and a few almost completely-destroyed archaic sunken floored buildings. . To the East and North from the house were found a dozen functional pits for economical use, related to the Ist - early IInd century. , Many sherds as well as unbroken vessels were found: amphorae, black lacquered-, grey-clay and red-clay ceramics and hand-made ceramics, lamps, wares of glass, iron and bronze. Among the artifacts found there are: glazed ceramics (second half of the I cent. BC. - early I century AD.), a large iron key (found in Olbia for the first time); stone molds for making decorations in the ‘animal’ style (Late-Archaic – Early Classical Age). The Pre-Getae Phase is represented by the lattices used for construction (Late Archaic and Early Classical Phase). The pavement remains date to late VI-V century BC; a number of construction complexes of the Late Archaic Phase – all found at the edge of the upper terrace. These nine buildings had various functions, although. All but two, are sunken-floored buildings carved deep into the bedrock. Two of these buildings overlapped with the basements of the Ist - first half of the IInd century). Their filling materials were removed while digging out the pit. The rock-cut pits are covered with the an occupation layer, in which materials of earlier periods are mixed with ceramic fragments of the I century. In general almost all the dug-outs were filled simultaneously, within the period of the first quarter of the V cent. BC. The latest find of the Late-Archaic Phase is a large hole (4.7 m in section), some part of which probably served as a botros. This assumption is confirmed by fragments of painted architectural terracotta and a dozen graffiti (four of them are dedicated to Aphrodite). From the end of the first quarter of the V century BC. the botros of the Aphrodite sanctuary was completely covered with earth. It functioned quite a short time, and it could only be built once the sunken-floored buildings had been filled -in. Another botros of Aphrodite sanctuary was found earlier on plot P-25, dated to the V century BC. Another find in Olbia is worth mentioning, which was found in the occupation layer – a rectangular sewed plaque depicting a sitting griffin, made of yellow metal, produced in Greece (the IV century BC.).
