Season

    • Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient town located at the edge of modern Bitola. There is an ongoing debate over which of the Macedonian kings erected the town. Some scholars believe it was built by Philip II of Macedon while others think that Philip V was the founder. However, the Hellenistic layers of the town are not researched enough. As a large town on the Via Egnatia, HeracleaƬs urban development climaxed during Roman rule. The theatre, the portico with sculptures and the baths were built at that time. Later, in the centuries of Early Christianity the town became an Episcopal centre whose bishops are noted on the documents from some of the church councils. There are three basilicas and an Episcopal residence from this period uncovered by the excavations in the past. The mosaic from the narthex of the Large Basilica is one of the greatest masterpieces of Early Christian art on the Balkans. The excavations in 2005 were focused on the tower Number 2 of the Southern Fortification Wall. The rectangular tower was built to protect the postern in this part of the wall. A pre-wall is also discovered. The Southern Fortification Wall is put in wide chronological frames from the end of the 4th to the 6th century AD.
