Work to clean the walls marking the north-eastern edge of the town brought to light the north-eastern corner of a structure built of tufa blocks. This was part of the platea of a building that extended to the south. The town wall, followed for 25 m, had a cement nucleus containing large irregular fragments of tufa. It had been constructed in sections and rested directly on the yellowish pozzalana bedrock. At a distance of 12 m from the wall there was a quadrangular enclosure in _opus incertum_, without flooring, which may have been part of the intake of the canal (Alveo Marotta) which in this tract followed the line of the walls’ defensive ditch. At circa 50 m west of the town wall the remains of pre-Roman structures and a beaten earth road surface, circa 3 m wide, were uncovered. The road was the continuation of that found further south in 1997. Along both sides of the road were the remains of the tufa foundations of at least three buildings (13x6; 5,50x6; 6,50x6 m) linked by an opening flanked by imposts built of regular tufa blocks. Inside a pit, situated at a tangent to this wall, was material datable to the first half of the 5th century B.C. A large oval pit, predating the structures, was situated between the pronao and the oikos, and cut by the latter. It contained carenated impasto cups, Italo-geometric cups and impasto jars (end of the 7th century B.C.) The presence of a fragment of antefix “a palmetto dritta” (mid 6th century B.C.) confirmed the use of the area in the archaic period. The excavation of other pits, wells and the surface produced material datable, at the latest, to between the 4th-3rd century B.C. and belonging to an occupation phase whose structures were probably removed in the post antique period.
