In the north-west suburb of Alife, just outside the Porta Pedimonte, an excavation undertaken as part of a subdivision of land by the Cooperativa Matese 2000, uncovered a stretch of a road with a gravel make up, which extended the cardo maximus thus constituting one of the main axes of the centuriation of the territory. The road, although damaged over the centuries, could be traced to a width of circa 9.50 m. It seemed to be characterised by a central part, circa 3.00 m wide, which corresponded either to a first construction phase or to a different function (e.g. a central carriageway distinct from the lateral areas for foot-traffic).
