Chronology

Season

    • This excavation uncovered several structures that appear to be dated in the Late Roman to Early Medieval period, even though ceramic finds and coins still need to be studied in further detail to confirm this date. It appears as if Wall 1 and 3 formed part of a berthing installation. This idea emerges from the fact that no stratigraphic deposits of cultural relevance were uncovered during excavations. In comparison, there is an especially stark difference between Wall 52 and all the SUs that this structure was filled with. If excavations could have been taken further eastwards in the area of Wall 52, there is a big probability that this structure was utilised in a different manner than Wall 1 and 3. Of a problematic nature are Wall 2 and the earlier Wall 71. Wall 2 appears to almost been mutilated prior to this excavation and no function for this feature became evident during excavations. Wall 71 was unfortunately uncovered at a very late period in the excavations and the extent of this structure was only uncovered within the trench limits and therefore very little could be excavated. It is hoped that through the analysis of artefacts recovered from these structures a better picture emerges. The nature of the valley in Marsa can be exceptionally well seen in the changing orientation of structures over time which must have been influenced by the changing water affluence route. This is an interesting geomorphological process that is dependent on several variables which should be further considered in a more detailed analysis of this site.
