Summary (English)

  • The Roman city of Cibalae is situated on the location of modern Vinkovci in the eastern Slavonia, on the fringes of Fruška gora, Dilj and Krndija. The area has been inhabited since the Early Neolithic. The Roman city on the left bank of the River Bosut succeeded the Celtic oppidum. During the reign of Caracalla, Cibalae was granted the status of a colony. Rescue excavation was carried out on an area of 200 m2 located in the centre of the western part of Cibalae. The removal of the rubble revealed a layer with finds of late medieval and Roman pottery. It lay above a Roman cultural deposit, the bottom of which partly overlay the earliest deposit of prehistoric date. The Roman layer yielded large quantities of movable finds: pottery, various iron objects, coins, glass objects, bone needles, etc. Architectural elements and various parts of service structures were also identified. Some of the architectural features can be interpreted as elements of a portico. The movable finds show a sequence of occupation from the 1st to 4th century AD. Also found were remains of a Roman road dated to the 4th century AD, built of a single-layer brick paving. A brick sewer was revealed under the road. (Maja Šunjić)
