Summary (English)
SOZOPOLIS (Alexander Manev – aleman@abv.bg, Dimitar Nedev) A Christian cemetery of the 18th – beginning of the 19th centuries was discovered and 19 graves containing skeletal remains from 29 individuals were explored. Several reburials were documented. The bodies were laid in wooden coffins, judging from the iron nails. The grave goods included silver coins, buttons and a finger-ring. A silver para of Sultan Selim III discovered in Grave No. 2 indicated the latest period of the cemetery. The graves were dug into a layer containing glazed sherds of the Ottoman period, sherds of the 12th – 14th centuries, including from sgraffito pottery, an anonymous Byzantine follis of the 11th century and a Latin imitative coin of the 13th century. Walls of the Middle Ages were discovered, built of roughly-cut stones bonded with mortar. Earlier walls built in rubble masonry were excavated as well.
