Summary (English)

  • Excavated in 1951 during research on the temple of Sardus Pater at Capo Frasca (Arbus), the villa of S’Angiarxia was the residence of a wealthy individual. The baths sector, the only one completely excavated, was large and with a high-quality decorative apparatus. The frigidarium was decorated with a polychrome mosaic, dating to the mid 3rd century A.D. Its east side was probably open towards the sea with a colonnade. The majority of the floors in the heated rooms were lost, with the exception of a patch of mosaic in the calidarium, also dating to the 3rd century A.D. Numerous fragments of coloured marble and at least three bronze clamps for fixing them to the walls are an indication of the high quality of the decoration, which was perhaps completed by the creation of one or more opus sectile floors. The excavation also produced a stamped brick (CIL XV, 737) dated 161-168 A.D.

The residential part of the villa has not been investigated but probably developed in linear mode to the north and south of the baths. The presence of an upper storey has been suggested for one of the rooms to the north. This wealthy residence was built on this site for its excellent position with respect to the main cities in the gulf of Oristano (Neapolis, Othoca, Tharros), which could be reached by sea. The presence of a spring and the relative ease of anchorage/docking made it possible to take advantage of this site.

The ruins were abandoned after the excavation and covered by vegetation, as in the late 1950s the area came to be part of the military firing range of Capo Frasca.
