Since 2005, the Laboratory of Ancient Topography and Photogrammetry (LabTAF) of the University of Salento in collaboration with the Superintendence of Salerno and Avellino is conducting archaeological investigations along the route of the Via Traiana which aim and reconstruct the route from Benevento to Brindisi. However, the research activities did not concern only the road but also the centers it crossed, including the vicus of Aequum Tuticum.

The area occupied by the settlement is located in Campania, in the district of S. Eleuterio, in the municipality of Ariano Irpino (Av), on a large plateau near one of the lowest Apennine passes; a strategic position from the point of view of communications so much so that it has been crossed by important roads since ancient times, as evidenced by the settlements identified around Aequum Tuticum and which document an occupation since the Neolithic.

The first archaeological evidence for Aequum Tuticum dates back to the 1st century. A.D. as documented by archaeological excavations carried out between 1989-1990 and 1992, by the Archaeological Superintendence of Salerno-Avellino-Benevento, in two distinct sectors of the town that have allowed to highlight a thermal building dating back to the 1st century AD, a complex of environments created in the second century AD and used until the fourth century. A.D., placed immediately below some rooms of the medieval age.

The investigations at Aequum Tuticum conducted by the Laboratory of Ancient Topography and Photogrammetry (LabTAF) of the University of Salento, were launched in 2010, both in urban and extra-urban areas, adopting a multidisciplinary approach characterized by systematic and integral surface reconnaissance, remote and proximal surveys, based on a solid knowledge of the historical-archaeological data published. The research activity carried out with the permission to point out the data already known, to precisely define the interior of the built-up area, to determine the positions of the main necropolises, to define some urban spaces, such as the forum, and to reconstruct the route exactly of the main road axes: via Traiana , via Herculia and via Aemilia.
