Summary (English)

  • Continuing on from the work carried out in 2019, this season saw the removal of the Neolithic ground level in a 5cm spit in quadrants AR-AZ/16-22. The exposed levels were documented both manually and digitally (3D photopiano). In quadrants AS-AT/15-16, charcoal fibres were identified lying NS (US 1043); it was not possible to identify the cut that contained them, but they seem to indicate a spread of burnt organic material, perhaps the residue of a structure disturbed by post-depositional activity. Samples were taken for micro-morphological and anthracological analyses. In quadrants AR-AT/20-22 there was an abundant spread of pottery, lithics and faunal material, baked clay and small cobblestones, which suggest the presence of sunken structures below, as seen in other sectors of the excavation.

The excavation of a sunken structure also continued, a large posthole in quadrants AN-AO/18-19, identified in 2020 but only partially investigated (US 1039). A sub-circular cut, it had vertical walls in the upper part and then, on the east side, there seemed to be a double step down to the bottom, which had an uneven surface with cobblestones. It was 70 cm deep and 110 cm in diameter. Three fills were identified: US 1037 reached a depth of 70 cm and was limited to the central part of the cut and can be interpreted as the remains of the post housing; the fill below US 1038 may have collapsed from the walls or be the fill put in after the post was positioned and, lastly, US 1044 the base fill, identified following the removal of several cobblestones, probably used as wedges, was the preparation of the hole prior to its use.
The lithic finds were documented using the RTI technique.
