Summary (English)

  • In 2007 a total area of 375 sq. meters was uncovered. 12100 artifacts were recovered, including osteological remains, paleobothanical materials.
Under an ash layer was found a surface with traces of fire. There were fragments of amphorae of the Medieval Period (1100 —1300 AD) and glazed ceramics of by this period and a later period. Other finds are represented by materials of Ancient Russian period and Golden Horde period. In this layer was revealed a rare treasure — a fragment of a molten reliquary cross (ca. 1100—1300 AD).
The occupation layer of the settlement dates to the 4th century — first quarter of 3rd century BC. During the excavations were discovered the remains of five features (a pit 138, asunken-floored building 136, with a pit 137, a sunken-floored building 142) and the remains of an aboveground construction of the 1st construction period, the remains of two aboveground complexes and a pit 139 (2nd construction period).
Both sunken-floored buildings of the 1st construction periods had an irregular form , roughly rectangular with oval corners.
The sunken-floored building136 was oriented by the cardinal directions. The walls of the construction trench were vertical without cob. No materials were found on the floor. In the upper part of the filling were found destruction debris and more than 100 fragments of amphorae of the second half of the 4th cent. BC. On the level of the floor in the eastern part of building 136 was found an oval pit 137 filled with dense ashes and a large numbers of mud bricks.
Sunken-floored building142 is sub-rectangular with a rounded ends, 22 metres square. . A vertical southern wall is 4,8 m.long In southern part was found mud bricks, with courses almost almost 0,50 m. high. The entrance to the dug-out lay in the south-eastern corner and consisted of earthen stairsBuilding 144 also belonged to the 1st construction period.
The earliest material is represented by amphorae from Heraclea Pontica The amphora stamp on one of them — APXE[Σ]/ΤΡΑΤ…/ΜΟΛΟ… is dated to the first quarter of the 4th cent. BC.
Between quadrants 114 and 115 was found a Heraclean amphora (resembling a pithos) without a stem. The proportions and metric data make it possible to suggest a date in the first quarter of the 4th cent. BC. Among the black-glazed wares are fragments of open-shape vessels (2nd-3rd quarter of the 4th cent. BC).Among other finds are spindle whorls, ceramic and stone leads, fragments of terracotta figurines, iron nails, variant stone tools, bronze arrowheads (three-edged and trilobed arrowheads of the 4th cent. BC), coins, bone tools.
To the 2nd construction period belonging the remains of the stone and mud brick buildings,.Inside the building were found the remains of clay fireplace and a large hand-made jar (in situ), behind the wall — as well as the stem of the Chios «cap» amphora, which was dug into earth. The context is dated by sherds of Heracleian amphorae, one of which has the stamp ΠΕΔΙΕΩΣ.There were fewer fragments of amphorae from Chios, Sinop, Thassos, Chersonesus and centers which are hard to identify. There was also a stamp on a fragment of a poorly-preserved Thassos amphora of a biconical-conical type dating to the last quarter of the 4th — beginning of the 3rd cent. BC.
