ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS IN PAUTALIA – VELBAZHD – KYUSTENDIL (Doichin Grozdanov – doichyn_eg@abv.bg) The explored area is 250 sq. m. Remains of the Modern, Revival, Mediaeval, Late Antique and Roman periods were discovered. Sherds, fragmentary building ceramics, fragmentary and intact tobacco-pipes and a bronze powder flask of the Revival period were found. Destroyed Mediaeval constructions, presumably houses, built of stones and bricks were discovered. Construction No. 1 measures 3.20 m by 2.20 m and according to the pottery, it dates to the 10th – 11th centuries. Construction No. 2 measures 2.40 m by 2.70 m and lies over the Late Antique stratum. It is earlier than construction No. 1. Construction No. 3 presumably was contemporary to No. 2. A Late Antique pavement, 1.10 – 1.20 m in width, built of fragments of building ceramics and boulders, was discovered. A destroyed Late Antique construction, built of fragmentary bricks and boulders and dug into the Roman stratum, was explored. It has a trapezoid layout and measures 1.50 m by 1.50 m by 1.30 m by 1 m. Two Late Antique pits (Nos. 2 and 3), containing sherds, fragmentary building ceramics, animal bones and charcoal, were discovered. According to the numismatic material, the finds of the Roman period date to the second half of the 3rd – beginning of the 4th centuries AD.
