Summary (English)

  • The fortified site of S. Giovanni di Flagogna is situated at a height of circa 322.8 m a.s.l., on a hill overlooking the fraction of Flagogna and the valley of the river Tagliamento and the Arzino torrent, within the territory of Forgaria nel Friuli (UD).
A number of trial trenches were dug inside the fortified area in 1982 and 2007.

In the summer of 2008 regular excavation campaigns began. The research showed that the archaeological deposit had been heavily disturbed in recent times by work to reorganize the site and by restoration work on the church of S. Giovanni, situated in the southern part of the fortification. Despite the paucity of the stratigraphy, the data acquired, also from an analysis of the walls, attested that the main occupation phases can be dated to between the 13th and 15th century. However, an earlier occupation phase, as mentioned in documentary sources, cannot be excluded.
