Summary (English)

  • The reopening of the excavation at Punta Chiarita on Ischia uncovered a new structure, also oval in plan, to the east of the one already known. Of the new structure only the southern part remained, built in dry-stone. Inside the wall were three post holes for the roof supports. The construction was not built up against the terrain but was separated from the hill slope behind by a channel for the collection and drainage of rainwater. On the floor of the house were the pottery containers broken by the force of the mud slide which buried them, together with four circular cuts marking the bottoms of four large pithoi which must have been used for storage.

On the uppermost of the terraces above the structure was a bench. Its base was constituted by small and medium sized stones and the top by larger better finished stones, suitable for use as work surfaces and/or supports for large basins. The two terraces situated behind the new structure may also be interpreted as having been used for agricultural purposes. Here, on the ancient ground surface scattered with limpet shells and charcoal fragments, groups of rather small stones came to light that were roughly aligned and may be interpreted as boundaries delimiting agricultural spaces.
