Summary (English)
EXPLORATIONS IN AUGUSTA TRAIANA – VEREYA, SQUARE 69A (Dimiter Yankov, Maria Kamisheva – maria_ivanowa@abv.bg) Remains of the western inner and outer fortification walls of Augusta Traiana and a rectangular tower at the inner wall were discovered on an area of c. 300 sq. m. The outer wall is preserved up to 4.60 m in height. The inner wall was explored up to 18.50 m in length and the outer wall – up to 16.50 m in length. The different construction periods of building and reconstruction of the inner wall were registered. Initially, the wall was 1.65 m in width with pilasters built from its inner side and situated at 3.50 m from each other. During the second period of reconstruction, parts of the free spaces between the pilasters were filled with uneven stones with a bonding medium of mortar. Most likely, the second period of the reconstruction of the inner wall dates to the second half of the 3rd – beginning of the 4th centuries AD. At the same time, the rectangular fortification tower was built. The tower measures 7.10 m by 4.25 m and lies at c. 60 m to the north from the Western gate of the city and at 40 m to the south from another rectangular tower. The northern and the southern walls of the tower are 1.60 m in width and the outer western wall is 2.25 m in width. The entrance of the tower is 1.30 m in width. The next construction period was related to the building of the outer fortification wall in the end of the 5th – beginning of the 6th century AD. The wall is 2.60 m in width and is built in opus mixtum. Two houses of the 6th century AD were excavated to the north of the tower and a stone pavement was discovered in front of the inner fortification wall.
