Summary (English)

  • The suburban sanctuary dedicated to Hercules Victor or Invictus, highest divinity of the ancient Tibur, stands outside the city at a distance of 250 meters beyond the walls. The cult place, frequented since the proto-historic age, sits on an important route of seasonal migration directed toward the Sannio, and became monumentalized as we see it today in the 1st century BC.
Two parts of the imposing complex may be distinguished: the base with substructure and the actual sacred area. The sacred area was constituted by a vast open space surrounded by porticoes on three sides, completely open toward the flat country in front. The large temple and a theatral cavea were located in the center. The excavations, still in progress, are concentrating on the temple-theater and on the upper porticoes.
