Summary (English)

  • The settlement of Halmeu–Vamă is situated north of Halmeu village, in the free area between the Romanian and Ukrainian border. The site was found during a rescue excavation in November 2000. Close to this area we found pottery from different periods (Middle Ages, Bronze Age, the Neolithic), which occupied the terrace of the Eger brook. During the autumn of 2001, some surveys conducted at Kiraly Domb/ Dâmbul Craiului, situated on the edge of the terrace, revealed the extension of the Neolithic settlement at Vama location. The area includes two dome-shaped hills (Kiraly Domb 1 and 2), about the same size, with oval surfaces, 40 × 45 m in diametre at the most, without taking into account the surrounding trench. Neolithic complexes C5, C6: small sized, containing a few sherds from the Piscolt collection. Neolithic complex C4: large sized, containing pottery. The sizes of the pit are about 7 × 4 m, but it is not fully excavated. The maximum depth is about 1.56 m. The pottery: on the whole, the clay of the pots with thick walls contains organic ingredients, sand. In general, the pottery was well fired. The colour ranges from dark brown to red-grey. Most pottery consists of undecorated vessels. The surface was covered by engobe and, in general, the painted segments are very badly preserved. The painted ornament was made exclusively with black paint and the basic elements of the ornamental pattern are bands of various widths used in the composition of an unfinished pseudo-spiral, and meanders. Some pieces were decorated by finger impressions. The Middle Neolithic complex of the settlements of Halmeu–Vamă is directly analogous with the settlements of Piscolt–Lutărie and Săcuieni–Horo. We date these sites to the final middle phase of the Piscolt Group of the Painted Pottery Culture.
