    Summary (English)

    • TARNOVO (Evgeni Dermendzhiev – e_dermendgiev@abv.bg) The cemetery was situated in the northern part of Asenov Quarter, at the foot of the southern slope of the Arbanashko Plateau. It was discovered in 2016 during building works, when seven graves and a midden pit were excavated. In 2018, 36 Christian burials were explored, belonging to a district cemetery in the Northern Suburb of the Mediaeval capital Tarnovo. The dead were mostly adults, but there were four children and three babies buried as well. Stone slabs and stones were placed over the skulls of the bodies in four graves. Graves Nos. 12 and 36 had tombstones without inscriptions or decoration. Reburied skeletal remains from earlier burials were discovered in 12 graves. Iron nails and carbonized wooden boards from coffins were found in seven graves. The grave goods included 10 copper buttons, a glass bead, a small jug, an iron knife, five coins of AD 1100 – 1150, AD 1190 – 1275 and AD 1325 – 1350. Judging from the coins and the grave goods, the cemetery dated to the 12th – 14th centuries. Three of the graves were later, probably dating from the 17th – 18th centuries. Two midden pits were excavated, containing sherds and animal bones. Pit No. 2 contained fragmentary bricks and roof-tiles, a fragment of a small ashlar, a piece of a lead sheet for roof covering and a terracotta rosette from façade decoration. These finds indicated that there was a district church located nearby and the cemetery appeared around it. In addition, pieces of iron slag, two terracotta tripods used for stands of sgraffito pottery inside the kilns and fragmentary burned clay plaster were discovered in the stratum of the 13th – 14th centuries, indicating that production activities were carried out nearby. The finds discovered outside the graves and the midden pits dated to the 13th – 14th centuries and included iron arrowheads, iron awls, an iron needle, a lead spindle whorl, a pot, sherds from sgraffito pottery and kitchenware.
